Until a few decades ago, most Americans had never heard of Acai berries. The berry was only grown in South America and it goes bad if not frozen or eaten within 24 hours or so. This made it very hard for people outside of that continent to receive the berries.
Industry moved into the agricultural areas of South America and streamlined the process of getting the berry from the tree to the freezing plant. Now the berries could be shipped frozen to anywhere in the world.
The appeal of the Acai berry is two-fold. First, it tastes delicious. It’s a hardy sweet berry that tastes unlike anything else. Second, it’s considered a “super food” in that is loaded with antioxidants at levels higher than most any of food on the planet.
Many people believe that Acai berries help with skin appearance & weight loss. In more recent studies, Acai berries show possible use as a way to prevent or stave off Alzheimer’s disease as well as Parkinson’s disease. Acai berries also help eliminate free radicals which contribute to heart disease.
About 10 or 15 years ago, Acai berries started catching on as the base in fruit cups and smoothie bowls. When the flavor of Acai is mixed with other berries like blueberries and strawberries, as well as fruits like banana, the taste is out of this world. This is why we sell so many of these bowls during our operating months.
Try your Acai bowl with granola, cocoa, raisins, nuts, dates, just about anything tastes good with this delicious berry. If you are unsure what to try, ask our staff to help guide you. They can usually ask a few questions and have a good recommendation for you.
