Hurricane Preparation in the Outer Banks

North Carolina doesn’t get a ton of hurricanes but it still does suffer from hurricane exposure from time to time. Being on the east coast of the United States puts NC in the path of hurricanes that form in the lower to mid-Atlantic and travel in a northwestern direction.

The last major storm to hit here was Fran in 1996. Before that it was Emily just three years prior. These storms did their fair share of damage.

Whenever there is a hurricane on the horizon and a possibility it may hit NC, it is always a good idea to be prepared. Here are some step that will help you:

• Sign up for EAS (Emergency Alert System). You can usually find text or email options.
• Know where your local storm-safe shelters are. If there are none, find a small windowless room that is safe against flooding.
• Know the evacuation routes.
• Gather supplies for at least three days. This includes non-perishable food and plenty of water.
• Store your important documents in a safe dry place.
• Prepare your property or building. Tie down all loose objects. Clear your drains and gutters. Put up hurricane shutters on windows.
• If you are going to leave the area, do so at least several days before the storm hits. There can be a lot of traffic for last minute evacuees and this can get dangerous .
